Manchester City are preparing to make a surprise bid for striker Didier Drogba. The 36-year-old Ivorian international has been linked with a return to Chelsea but Manuel Pelegrini is thought to be interested in the striker, who is a free agent after leaving Galatasary at the end of last season.

Louis van Gaal is attempting to boost his defence with a £16 move for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels, 25. The club are also thought to be monitoring Ajax's defensive midfielder Daley Blind. Van Gaal is also said to be closing in on Arsenal and Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen.

Meanwhile Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said he will not look to sign a striker during the transfer window. Wenger completed the signing of Chilean attacking winger Alexis Sanchez, 26, for £35m earlier in the month. This rules out a move for AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli, 23, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal all summer.

Leicester are hoping to make their Premier League return with Trabzonspor winger Flourent Malouda in their side. The 34-year-old, formerly of Chelsea, could return to England with Leicester said to be closing in on a £7m deal.
