A new footpath linking Batheaston with Bathampton has been officially opened.
The £890,000 footbridge and cycleway across the River Avon was opened by Ian Gilchrist, vice-chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council on Tuesday.
Batheaston Parish Council said it was delighted with the project.
In a statement it said: "The £890,000 bridge was originally mooted in the parish council's Vision Plan in 2009 and was originally intended to be of wooden construction. Batheaston Parish Council are pleased to have worked alongside Bathampton and Bathford Parishes to set in motion the plans which are set to benefit residents of all three villages."
The project has been partly funded through the Department of Transport's Local Sustainable Transport Fund.
B&NES Council leader, Paul Crossley (Lib-Dem, Southdown), said the new footbridge would improve access for walkers and cyclists.
The new route will allow people to travel from the centre of Batheaston, via the new footbridge across the River Avon and council-owned fields to Mill Lane, linking with Bathampton and the National Cycle Route 4 on the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath avoiding the need to use busy London Road.
