TOM BRADSHAW: Army link-up can help Bath Rugby unearth more secret weapons like Semesa Rokoduguni

Big-name signings are great for a club but even better are those off-the-radar mavericks who suddenly burst onto the scene, materialising as if from nowhere. Such bolts from the blue are rare but Bath already have two on their hands. One is obvious. Semesa Rokoduguni is a winger that no-one wants to mark. Ferociously strong and with a sharpness of pace matched by his sharpness of vision, Roko is the kind of exhilarating line-breaking three-quarter who inspires supporters and team-mates alike. Having been plucked from the Army, Lance Corporal Rokoduguni has only just completed his first full season as a pro but it already seems like he's been an established face for much longer. And, talking to senior people around the Bath squad and to people associated with the England camp, it would seem that his England Saxons cap and his game against the Barbarians earlier this summer are only the start of things as far as his international career is concerned. So it was a genuine boost when Bath announced earlier this month that Rokoduguni had signed a contract extension, keeping him at The Rec until at least 2016. Another bolt of electricity comes in the form of Tom Dunn. The Academy hooker is significantly younger than Rokoduguni and hasn't had the meteoric rise. But he announced his arrival in May with a performance in the final of the European Challenge Cup that befitted a player of far greater experience. His rib-adjusting tackle of George North in the first half was particularly memorable. I expect Dunn to become a genuine contender for the Bath number two shirt this coming season, particularly when Rob Webber is away on England duty. But could The Rec yet see another bolt from the blue ahead of the new season? The Premiership Rugby 7s Series kicks off later this month and Bath could well use it to attempt to unearth Roko Mk II. Last year, Bath deployed a couple of soldiers in their 7s backline and the club has consistently made no secret of its desire to further cultivate its links with the Army. The club has a smooth relationship with Rokoduguni's commanding officer at the Royal Dragoon Guards and club chief executive Nick Blofeld is a former Gurkhas officer – not a bad line to have on your CV when you are trying to get first dibs on the latest rising stars in the Army XV. Sniffing out rugby talent in the Army also chimes with Bath's stated policy of focusing their recruitment on English-qualified players. So I for one wouldn't be surprised if we saw a soldier or two feature in Bath's Group B games on July 31 at Gloucester. And it would be a nice pre-season pressie to unearth another Roko, wouldn't it?
