More people reporting sexual offences

More and more victims of sexual offences are coming forward to report the crimes, according to new figures.

Police say there has been an increase of 20 per cent in the number of sexual offences being reported in England and Wales.

Experts say publicity surrounding high profile cases like Jimmy Savile and Operation Yewtree has prompted more victims to come forward.

The increase was recorded by the Crime Survey for England and Wales,

Police recorded 64,000 sexual offences in one year up to March 2014, and the figures showed rape had risen by 27%, the highest level for more than 10 years.

Mark Bangs, from the Office for National Statistics, said: "Part of the rise in sexual offences is related to the effect of the Operation Yewtree investigation, which has brought to light a large number of historic sexual offences."
