The TaxPayers' Alliance has visited Bath as part of a national campaign on financial waste.

Its roadshow sees the campaign visit 29 towns and cities in nine days, to raise local awareness of how councils are spending taxpayers' money.

The TPA is an independent campaign, not linked to any political party.

Bath TPA co-ordinator Tim Newark joined prospective conservative MP Ben Howlett and the TPA roadshow members outside Bath Abbey, where they handed out leaflets to the public.

Political director Dia Chakravarty said: "We want necessary savings. There is so much financial waste in the public sector and if we can cut back the waste then we can provide essential services to people, keep taxes lower, and then people would have more money in their pockets.

"We are looking at specific examples from cities to highlight waste from each particular council and to make people more aware."

Mr Howlett added: "Parking charges have gone here by nearly 355 per cent since the lib dems took over. This is a big amount of waste and a big tax on people's pockets, and this the sort of thing we are trying to highlight."

The campaign visited Swansea, Cardiff and Bristol before finishing for the day in Bath. The roadshow continues with visits to Southampton, Brighton and Crawley.
