Two people have been taken to the Royal United Hospital after a house fire forced the closure of Combe Park.

A woman, believed to be the owner of the house, and her disabled son were taken to RUH as a precaution, suffering from smoke inhalation.

The blaze was being tackled by five fire crews, who responded to a call at 3.36pm.

The fire began on the first floor of the three-story house, and quickly rose to the top floor. Part of the roof had clearly collapsed.

It is not yet known what caused the fire but an investigation is likely to begin tomorrow (Friday). Combe Park was closed while the firefighters dealt with the fire and it is thought the road will open later on Thursday evening.

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can't commit to getting anyone in there to get a fire investigation. The crews have been tackling the fire from the street due the severity of the fire. It would have been unsafe to put them inside though it is now under control.

"They will be here for as long as it takes to extinguish the flames completely. We apologise any inconvenience caused by this road closure but our priority is to deal with the fire."

The road closure affected the number 14 First Bus service which was diverted, and residents living on the road. There was some congestion on Newbridge Hill (A431) around the New Crown Inn junction but traffic was moving. Cars were also being re-directed from the Weston end of Combe Park

Thursday marks the first day of industrial action being taken by the service. Two of the fire crews on site were from Yate and Paulton and were allowed to come and deal with the fire in agreement with the Fire Brigades Union.

Shocked residents looked on from down the road.

Combe Grove resident Ruhi Farmer believes she was the first person on the scene. "I was just on my way back from work when four ambulance men carried a man out of the house and into an ambulance. He is unable to walk and needs medical attention as he can't get out of a wheelchair.

"The fire was raging from 4pm until about 4.30pm. It was like an inferno."

Another Combe Grove resident, Edna Ash, added: "It's just awful. My first thought was just hoping nobody was inside. I wondered what I could do to help. I was horrified and just not seen anything like it. There was a thick black cloud going on and on and the service are doing all they can despite there being a strike on."

Although the fire caused extensive damage to the house fire crews stopped it from spreading into a neighbouring property. Firefighters began damping down at around 5.30pm. Avon Fire and Rescue said the fire is thought to have started accidentally.
