Two people have been killed and a third taken to hospital in a critical condition after a car came off the road on the A37 at Farrington Gurney, south of Bath.
Police closed a section of the busy road, between the A362 and A39, until 12.30pm this lunchtime following the serious crash at around 8pm last night.
Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the incident, which involved just one car, a Volkswagen Polo.
All the occupants have been described by Avon and Somerset Police as being in their late teens or early 20s and a man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene.
A third patient has been taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol in a critical condition, suffering head and chest injuries.
Paramedics also treated a number of other walking wounded.
Investigation work took place at the scene throughout the night and this morning, meaning the road was closed for more than 16 hours.
Avon and Somerset Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and contact the collision investigation unit on 101.
