Steven Gerrard is in no hurry to decide on his England future, despite speculation that he will quit international football in the wake of his country's early World Cup exit.

The England skipper has won 113 caps for his country – two fewer than David Beckham – but was culpable for Luis Suarez's winner for Uruguay on Thursday night.

That result meant England crashed out of the tournament in the group stages for the first time since 1958.

"There's no truth that I'll be making any announcement in the next week I need more time than that," said Gerrard.

"I spoke to the manager and said I needed more time to decide on my future.

"I think I've agreed with manager I'm going to speak to him in a few weeks.

"I'm going to speak to people who mean a lot to me but it's a big decision and I'll make it in due course."

The Liverpool midfielder, 34, accepted responsibility for the team's exit and admitted England need to learn to combat the nous of other international sides.

"The players take full responsibility for what went on," he added.

"As leader I take responsibility and now it's gone wrong we have to shoulder that together.

"We have to take it on our shoulders and not let the manager stand out there on his own.

"We came across a Uruguay side that were cute and clever and disruptive. They were difficult to beat, they never let England get any momentum going forward.

"Maybe that comes down to experience. We've conceded four goals in two games and that tells you that we need to toughen up as a team."

Despite only having pride to play for, Gerrard is determined to ensure England leave Brazil with three points under their belts.

"All we can do is stick together," he said ahead of Tuesday's final group game with Costa Rica.

"We agreed to fight for it together and take the responsibility together. We are only thinking of the fans now and they want a win in the last game and we want that as well."
