Brazil 2014 World Cup: Roy Hodgson receives Football Association backing as England's exit is confirmed

Roy Hodgson has received the full backing of Football Association chairman Greg Dyke after England's World Cup hopes were extinguished only a week into the tournament.

Costa Rica's 1-0 victory over Italy in Recife consigned Hodgson's men to their first group-stage exit since 1958.

They had lost the first two games in the World Cup for the first time following back-to-back 2-1 defeats to the Azzurri and Uruguay

"We're supportive of Roy Hodgson, we've asked him to stay as manager," Dyke said.

"He came to do a four-year cycle and people have been asking the question: 'Will he stay?'. The answer is yes. That is the view of myself, of everybody else here and of others at the Football Association.

"We do not see any value in changing. We think Roy has done a good job and it is an approach over four years and we hope to do better in the European Championships.

"I mean it's disappointing to have lost both games, narrowly, both to sides that are in the top eight in the world.

"There are some positives. We've got young players who have been blooded here and who have got into tournament football here."

England play their final group game against Costa Rica, who incredibly have now booked their progress to the knockout stages, on Tuesday (5pm).
