England boss Roy Hodgson spoke of his "bitter disappointment" as England were left on the brink of World Cup elimination by a 2-1 defeat to a Luis Suarez-inspired Uruguay.
A stuttering performance replaced the promise shown against Italy on Saturday and the same final scoreline means England are bottom of Group D with a game to go.
Only two Italy victories and a win over Costa Rica on Tuesday will give England any chance of reaching the second round.
Hodgson said: "I'm really bitterly disappointed.
"We came with such high hopes and have not been able to deliver. It is a major sadness for me."
You have to go back to 1958 when England last exited at the group stages and they had never before lost their first two games at the finals.
"I'm gutted, we played so well in spells but unfortunately the luck went against us," said England defender Phil Jagielka.
"It was a similar story to the Italy game, we played pretty well but well not enough.
"We're very disappointed and everyone is devastated in the changing room.
"When we equalised we had them on the back foot and we had a couple of near chances but we just couldn't convert.
"There's still a small chance for us, we've just got to put a good performance in against Costa Rica and see what happens."
