Police have closed Lower Bristol Road in Bath while firefighters deal with a "substantial" house blaze.
Avon Fire and Rescue received a call at 2.48pm due to smoke coming from a property in Vernon Terrace in Twerton.
When crews arrived they could see smoke and flames coming from the roof and found a fire on the ground floor and first floor of two terraced houses.
A fire service spokeswoman said it appeared that the fire had started in one house and spread to the neighbouring property.
At one point fire chiefs were forced to withdraw the firefighters from inside the buildings as the blaze caused the roof to collapse at both homes.
Six crews have attended the scene of the fire this afternoon and by 5pm the fire had been put out.
An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said nobody had been injured and all the occupants were out of the building.
They have closed the road from Windsor Bridge to Weston Lock and motorists are advised to find alternative routes.
However, the road is expected to remain closed for some time, with the fire service spokeswoman saying it would be blocked off to traffic until crews had left the scene.
