England fell to their first defeat at the Rabobank Hockey World Cup on Saturday as world number one side Australia racked up a 5-0 win. Bobby Crutchley's men are now third in Pool A and must beat second-placed Belgium in their final group game on Monday if they are to reach the semi-finals. Former Millfield School captain Simon Mantell was among the used substitutes for Crutchley's side in Rotterdam. England were immediately on the back foot as Australia broke the deadlock in the opening minute through Matt Gohdes. Liam De Young added a second and the floodgates opened quickly opened as Jamie Dwyer and Kieran Govers also scored before the break. It did not take Australia long to extend their advantage in the second half, with Aran Zalewski finding the backboards soon after the restart. England gave a much improved performance to keep Australia at bay for the remainder of the match but the damage had already been done. Former Team Bath Buccaneers coach Bobby Crutchley said: "Overall Australia were excellent and that's why they were the clear winners. "We didn't start well and that's frustrating. When you're forced to chase the game against someone like Australia it becomes harder and harder. "The good thing is our players really stood up in the second half and worked hard. They stood together which was great but we have to be far better at the start of a game and much more competitive. "Belgium are a good attacking team. They have plenty of players with a lot of quality and they are certainly a threat. Our job is to negate that, but also to put them under some pressure and impose our game on them."
