Ollie Devoto produced a moment of magic on his senior international bow as an England team also featuring Bath Rugby colleagues Semesa Rokoduguni and Jonathan Joseph played out an entertaining encounter against Barbarians at Twickenham on Sunday. Twenty-year-old Devoto, on as a first-half blood replacement for Exeter Chiefs' Henry Slade, showed wonderful vision to find Charlie Sharples with an incisive grubber kick which the Gloucester wing finished off. That was England's second try in a 39-29 defeat, which saw the hosts score first through Exeter's Dave Ewers and Slade kick the conversion. A vastly-experienced BaaBaas outfit quickly replied as a rapid counter-attack ended with Benson Stanley touching down and Brock James adding the extras. With Slade off the pitch, it was left to London Wasps full-back Elliot Daly to kick the penalty which restored England's lead but he was unable to convert Sharples' try. Back came the BaaBaas as Juan Martin Hernandez touched down following a superb cross-field kick from James, who also added the conversion. Slade, back on the pitch, scored a penalty to put England 18-14 up at half-time but they soon found themselves trailing for the first time as Mamuka Gorgodze forced his way over from a five-metre scrum. James kicked the conversion and a penalty moments later but England closed to within a point when Slade stretched to touch down in the corner. Both sides traded penalties as BaaBaas maintained a 27-26 lead, which they extended when Hosea Gear crossed the whitewash and Francois TrinhDuc kicked the conversion. Another Slade penalty cut the gap to 34-29 with ten minutes to go but Gear once again found space to power through for the final score of the match.
