Bath schoolchildren brave wind and rain to complete Ten Tors challenge

Schoolchildren from across Bath braved the weekend's wet weather to take part in a two-day trek across Dartmoor. The Ten Tors Challenge saw around 2,400 young people from across the South West walk up to 55 miles in strong winds and rain. The schools from Bath participating included Bath Community Academy, Beechen Cliff, King Edward's, Kingswood and the Royal High. Students from Bath Community Academy were wearing their new hoodies from Ten Tors sponsor Combe Down Garage. The Year 10 team from Kingswood, made up of Freya Jones, Eddie Narbett, Louis Charley, Rory Finnamore, Harry Heap and team leader Poppy Roper, completed the 35-mile route. Senior housemaster and head of outdoor pursuits John Davies said they worked hard to finish the expedition by 11.30am on Sunday. He said: "This is a tremendous achievement considering the conditions they endured on the moor. "Luckily much of their training had taken place in similar conditions so they were at least well prepared for what they faced." The 55-mile team from King Edward's was made up leader Hugh Sloan, Guy Allen, Matthew Smith, Rhys Lewis, Jonny Burnett and Joe Horrocks-Taylor, while the 35-mile team was leader Harry Clark, Dan Carter, Isaac Reid, Matthew Simonds, Benjy Heffer and Rory Sloan. They both put in strong performances, despite having to contend with heavy rain, strong wind, hail storms and deep mud. Commenting on the 35-mile team's effort, team manager Tim Laney said: "The King Edward's School team were the first team to complete their route, a testament to their skills of navigation, and all the hard work put into training over the last three months." Meanwhile, the 55-mile team would have been the first of their distance to finish had they not paused to change into their team t-shirts. Beechen Cliff School had four teams taking part and all the participants reached the finish line, despite the difficult conditions.
