Plans for Bath's £5 million flood defence scheme go on show

Plans of how Bath will protect itself against future flooding are to go on display. The £5 million Bath Quays Waterside Project will not only defend against flooding but enable Bath and North East Somerset Council to progress the city's Enterprise Area. The scheme, which is a joint project with the council and the Environment Agency, will put in place essential flood mitigation and defence works to the north and south banks of the River Avon between Churchill Bridge and Midland Bridge. It is claimed the work will reduce existing and future flood risk to the Lower Bristol Road and 60 properties on the south side of the river. The £1 billion Enterprise Area will create 2,500 new homes, 650,000 square feet of new workspace and 9,000 new jobs for local people. The council and Environment Agency are funding the works with a combination of Flood Defence Grant and Revolving Infrastructure funding made available by West of England Local Enterprise Partnership. Ed Lockington, from the Environment Agency, said: "We welcome working in partnership on this important piece of work and are pleased to work with Bath and North East Somerset Council on this project, which will reduce existing flood risk in Bath and help provide exciting redevelopment opportunities." Consultation boards will be on display on Thursday, May 8, and Friday, May 9, 3pm to 7pm at Green Park Station Foyer and Saturday, May 10, 9am to 1.30pm at Green Park Brasserie. The plans are also be available on the council's website at www.bathnes.gov.uk/bathquayswaterside.
