People trust local councils more than government ministers, it has been revealed.
Fewer than one in six people think ministers tell the truth all or most of the time.
Trust in local councillors was twice as high but they did not receive a ringing endorsement with
only 28 per cent of voters believing their local councillors tell the truth "most or all of the time" compared to just 15 per cent for government ministers and 24 per cent for MPs
The results were revealed in a survey which calls for greater power to be devolved to local authorities.
People living in the region said they identify far more with their local area rather than Britain as a whole.
The report comes as ministers and shadow ministers begin the long slog to next year's general election, with campaigning already under way in earnest for this year's European elections in late May.
The expenses scandal, sleaze claims and austerity have left Westminster's reputation in the doldrums, and the think tank IPPR said now almost two-thirds of people have trust in their local councils rather than Parliament, which is trusted by little more than one-third.
