Bath businesses and apprentices invited to enter awards

If you are an apprentice or you employ apprentices, you could be in line for a major award.

This year The Bath Chronicle has teamed up with its sister publication the Bristol Post to launch the Bristol and Bath Apprenticeship Awards 2014.

The awards are open to apprentices across the two cities as well as the companies which are championing apprenticeships, giving up time and money to train the engineers, builders and hotel owners of the future.

Categories look to celebrate the hard work of apprentices across many different sectors including education, construction, finance and public services. Other categories honour firms of different sizes and training providers.

Executive director of the Bath Chamber of Commerce and the Initiative in B&NES, Ian Bell, hosted last year's awards run by the Chronicle in Bath.

"It's great that the Chronicle gives such a high profile to apprenticeships because it not only recognises the great work that has already been done, but it will encourage more young people to consider an apprenticeship and also play a part in persuading more business to offer opportunities.

"Members of the Initiative in B&NES have agreed that one of our policy priorities this year will be to upgrade in the minds of teachers, parents and pupils the benefits of apprenticeships. We want to do something to remove the old-fashioned view that it is only the less able that opt for this route after school.

"Taking a modern apprenticeship could well be a much better option for some talented young people rather than going on an automatic pathway to university."

The awards have already attracted sponsorship from plane giant Airbus at Filton and engineering and manufacturing recruitment firm Hunter Selection based at Abbots Leigh.

The deadline for entries is April 28 and the winners will be announced at a gala awards night being held at Bristol Marriott City Centre Hotel on June 18.
