More people are jetting off on holiday from the South West than ever before.
Online travel agent, On the Beach, which will carry over one million customers from across the UK on their holidays this year, is expecting to see a significant increase in the number of people from the South West holidaying abroad in 2014.
According to On the Beach's data, bookings to sunshine destinations are up by 22%, as holidaymakers from the region are keen to get away from the 'great' British weather and enjoy a much needed break in the sun.
Majorca remains the number one destination for travellers from the region this year and is still seeing a 15% increase in bookings. However, it is Lanzarote that is seeing the biggest increase in demand with bookings up over 60%. Often overlooked, in favour of sister island Tenerife, Lanzarote offers beautiful beaches, a relaxed atmosphere and variety of 3 - 4 star hotels, and is becoming very popular particularly with families and couples.
The top 5 destinations from the South West: • 1. Majorca• 2. Costa Brava• 3. Tenerife• 4. Lanzarote• 5. Algarve
The average amount people from the region are spending on holidays this year has increased slightly (up 5%) which is due to a trend of travellers opting for all-inclusive breaks or upgrading hotels. While 3*hotels are the most popular (accounting for 57% of booking), customers are increasingly booking 4* (31%) and 5* hotels (5%).
All-inclusive holidays, which enable holiday makers to more closely manage holiday budgets are now, by far the most popular type of holiday, accounting for 40% of bookings from the South West. Although there is still demand for self-catering (27%), half board (13%) and bed and breakfast (11%).
Alistair Daly, Chief Marketing Officer for On the Beach said: "While confidence in the economy is improving, budgets are still tight which is why more people are looking for great value holidays. With over 30,000 hotels available On the Beach is cheaper than the high street and we can help you find the perfect beach holiday that won't break the bank."
