Royal Victoria Park charges review findings still being assessed amid Tory anger

Council chiefs say they are still assessing the impact of new parking charges in Bath's Royal Victoria Park. The last areas of free parking were taken out by Bath and North East Somerset Council in June. Opposition Tories and some local businesses say the introduction of charges for two and four-hour stays has hit both visitor numbers and trade. They are calling for the Lib Dem-run council to get on with a review which was promised after the first six months of the charges. They have called for the council to allow at least two hours' free parking, with the maximum stay increased to six hours, saying this would make visits to the park cheaper and easier for local residents while still preventing commuters from taking up spaces for the whole day. Conservative transport spokesman, Councillor Anthony Clarke, said: "First the council said it would review these parking charges in December, then this was pushed back to January. Now we are in February and there is still no sign of a decision. "The Liberal Democrats' readiness to hike on-street parking charges throughout the city is hurting local trade and harming the local economy. During last summer, traders at Victoria Park reported a drop in visitor numbers, and residents that I've spoken with say they want to see a period of free parking reintroduced at the park. "The tragedy is that this could so easily be resolved if only the Lib Dems were willing to listen. The council needs to get on and take a decision before the spring and summer, when more residents will be wanting to go and visit the park." A council spokesman said the review had not yet been assessed. "The review of the parking restrictions in Royal Victoria Park commenced after six months of operation in December 2013. The cabinet will consider the results of the review once the findings have been properly assessed by officers, and an announcement will be made about the next steps shortly afterwards."
