Concerns over safety of Kelston Road in Bath

Work is expected to start soon on stabilising Kelston Road in Bath as the number of roadworks pile up around the city. Concerns have been raised about the safety of the A431 between Bath and Bristol, with officers from Bath and North East Somerset Council apparently visiting the site three times a day to carry out stability checks. Councillor David Dixon, B&NES cabinet member for neighbourhoods, responded to worried residents on Twitter by saying that "serious works" were needed and it would have to be closed soon. It comes as engineers are still trying to resolve the landslide situation in Midford Road, which has seen the B3110 closed for a week-and-a-half. Essential resurfacing work is due to start on Brassknocker Hill next Monday, with the road scheduled to be closed for five days. However, since the Midford Road closure this has become one of the main routes out of Bath into Wiltshire and Somerset and highways officials are concerned about both roads being shut at the same time. In an email to Hinton Charterhouse Parish Council, the council's traffic management and traffic network manager Steve Blackmore said: "The Brassknocker resurfacing scheme is required with some urgency now as the existing surfacing is deteriorating at a significant rate. "We are however exploring if this could be done as a night time operation to help minimise disruption but again this will depend on weather conditions amongst other factors." Last Friday saw motorists queuing for hours to travel southwards out of Bath. The Midford closure combined with temporary traffic lights on the A36 at Limpley Stoke, meant traffic was tailed back along the A36 and up Brassknocker Hill. Hinton Charterhouse Parish Council said the A36 roadworks were down to the Highways Agency or its contractors trying to repair a manhole cover and have called for more coordination between the various agencies to make sure it does not happen again.
