Head coach Mike Ford pleased Bath Rugby's attacking intent paid off in victory over Newcastle

Bath Rugby head coach Mike Ford was delighted his side's attacking intent came good during their 24-6 victory over Newcastle Falcons yesterday. Torrential weather conditions meant for a lacklustre first half at The Rec, with fly-halves George Ford and Phil Godman landing a penalty a piece before the break. But the hosts took control after the restart and converted tries from Horacio Agulla, Leroy Houston and Francois Louw saw Bath solidify their place in the top four of the Aviva Premiership table. Head coach Ford said: "The first half was a very stop-start game. We wanted to play with tempo and they wanted to slow the football. They achieved that better than us in the first half. "We had enough field position and enough set-piece in their half to score more points but we didn't which put us under a little bit of pressure going into half-time. "The conditions got better as the game went on and the boys showed good shape at times. We had an excellent training session at Farleigh on Thursday and we were able to replicate that in the last 30 minutes. "I've got to give credit to Newcastle – I thought they played well at times. At one stage, when they were 6-3 up, they would have been licking their lips for a big scalp. "But we showed great resilience, we didn't go into our shells, and even when we made mistakes, we kept playing. Getting three tries was very pleasing. We'll take the four points and move on, and the momentum keeps going." It was not all good news for Bath, however, with flanker Carl Fearns suffering a hamstring injury in the warm-up, while both full-back Nick Abendanon and hooker Rob Webber's afternoons lasted less than ten minutes. Ford added: "We lost Carl Fearns in the last second of the warm-up, and Rob Webber and Nick Abendanon went off early. Carl has done his hamstring, Bendy is concussed and with Rob Webber it's his ankle. "We had to deal with that adversity, Newcastle fighting, the conditions, not kicking our goals, missing opportunities in the red zone in the first half, but we scored three really good tries in the second half to put the game to bed."
