Hundreds of men walked eight miles for two good causes today – and then rounded off the day with a pie, a pint and a televised game of rugby. Nearly 440 people took part in the Bath Men's Walk for Dorothy House and the Bath Rugby Foundation, strolling from the hospice's base in Winsley to The Rec. The event was launched last year to complement Dorothy House's all-women Midnight Walk, and then attracted around 270 walkers. Dorothy House director of fundraising Katrina Sudbury said: "It's been a great day. We're very pleased with the turn-out." The charities are hoping to increase the number of participants to 600 next year. First across the line were friends Ty Morgan from Southdown and Andy Nichols from Kingswood. It was the second time they had done the walk, and they completed the distance in just under two hours. The pair were part of a group walking in memory of Lizzie Dellow, a travel firm boss and mother of two, who died of cancer just over a year ago. Her husband Jamie, who runs a Bath building firm, has led teams at the walk on both occasions. Ty said: "We know Jamie through the rugby and we wanted to get involved. It's a great cause." Not far behind them was their former PE teacher Jeff Williams, from Peasedown St John, who now works with Jamie. "There's quite a crowd of us now, and the event is starting to build nicely. It's quite a scenic walk." Walking alongside him was Peter Boby, managing director of Peasedown-based technology firm Grapevine Communications. He said: "We had a bit of everything on the weather front – rain, sun, wind. But it was good walking weather and the ground held up very well." Matt Spanswick, from Peasedown St John, led a group assembled from the building trade. Matt, whose wife works for Dorothy House, said: "It wasn't too bad. It was a bit crowded on the river bank, but we're here now and that's great. His friend Vince Box, from Oldfield Park, said: "I really enjoyed it. I'd do it again." The men settled down to watch Six Nations rugby at The Rec clubhouse.
