A section of Lower Borough Walls in Bath has been cordoned off after a lorry carrying a crane toppled over. The incident, which has happened close to the Lamb and Lion pub, involves the construction work on the new Gainsborough Hotel. It is believed that the crane had just unloaded a generator when it toppled over. It is resting on part of the pub, and customers were evacuated due to safety concerns. The crane is still in place, as investigations need to be carried out to ensure the structure of the Lamb and Lion is safe before it is removed. Part of Lower Borough Walls is still closed to cars and pedestrians. Temporary traffic lights are in place at the end of Hot Bath Street directing traffic away from the area. Ben Howlett, 29, was drinking in the pub when it happened. He said: "It is crazy. "I was in the pub and heard a crash. "We were evacuated because they were concerned after safety. "It is not something you expect when you go out for a quiet drink." Sara Price, 25, was walking by when it happened. She said: "I didn't see exactly what happened, but I think it had just unloaded a generator, and then overbalanced. "I just heard a crash, and when I turned round the crane was on the pub." Galliford Try, the contractors working on the Gainsborough Hotel said:"At approximately 12.15pm on Wednesday, an incident occurred involving a delivery vehicle to the Gainsborough Hotel site in Lower Borough Walls. "No injuries have been caused by the incident and the site has been made secure. "Investigations are already under way and as a result it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."
The crane might have to stay there until investigations are carried out, and it is not known how long this will take. Because of this Bath and North East Somerset Council has put traffic management plans in place so that people travelling down Lower Borough Walls will not get stuck. Wales and West Utilities, which is working on Hot Bath Street has been asked to fill in the hole they have dug to enable people to get down the street. Police are on scene and have closed Pigeon Park. A barrier has been put up round the site, with people asked to stay behind it.
