Police arrest 32-year-old man on suspicion of arson after fire at Bath car showroom

Police have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of arson after a fire at a Bath car showroom which caused around £70,000 worth of damage. Firefighters were called to Allen Kia Bath on Lower Bristol Road, in Twerton, at around 3.40am this morning. Three crews from Bath and one from Brislington attended the incident, which involved four vehicles. They used jets and high pressure hose reels to extinguish the flames and bring the fire under control. There was also damage to the exterior of the car showroom itself, which affected the windows and smoke damage to a neighbouring building. The arrested man is currently being questioned at Bath police station Kia brand manager at the showroom, Andrew Muffett, said the damage could have been a lot worse. "I got the call from senior management at 7.30am. I was told at that point the whole place was down – I am relatively pleased it is only four cars." Mr Muffett added that the showroom was open as normal today. The fire aftermath attracted a small crowd this morning as passers-by stopped and took photographs on their mobile phones to share on social media. Staff from the showroom also congregated at the scene to survey the damage. Avon Fire and Rescue Service Group Manager, Anton Awramenko, said: "Fires involving vehicles can be extremely dangerous as they burn at very high temperatures, can spread easily and produce very toxic smoke. "Fortunately in this case our crews responded quickly to the incident and were able to prevent the fire from spreading further."
