Haycombe Drive flooded because of rain and blocked drain

People living along a Bath street are calling for action because a blocked drain keeps threatening their homes with flood water. Haycombe Drive has been under a foot of flood water since before Christmas because of continuing bad weather. Denise Long, who lives along the road, said a blocked drain was the problem. "We've just got this big flood outside our houses. "One chap came up from the council and had a look but didn't do anything. It's really bad when the buses drive through it - the water goes everywhere." Mrs Long said some of her neighbours had attempted to divert the water away from their homes. She added the drain had been causing flooding during heavy rain for more than 18 months but Bath and North East Somerset Council had yet to sort the problem. A spokesman for the authority said engineers visited the site earlier this week to temporarily alleviate the flood water. "During that visit it was identified that there may be an issue with the surface water sewer which the road drains connect to. Wessex Water are responsible for this sewer and we have reported the matter to them for further investigation. We understand that Wessex Water anticipate attending the scene within the next 24 hours. "Therefore we are sending our drain cleaning crew back to Haycombe Drive to endeavour to minimise concerns until Wessex Water arrive." This afternoon, the council said the floodwater had been cleared, and Wessex Water would now be investigating the cause of the problem. A road sweeper was also being sent to the area to help in the clear-up.
