Unemployment continues to fall in Bath. Figures released by the Office of National Statistics show that the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Bath fell by 299 to 1,073 in November. This is 0.5 per cent lower than the same month last year. In the wider Bath and north east Somerset district the number of people claiming dropped to 1,809. However, regionally the number of people out of work went up between August and October to 175,000, an increase of 4.9 per cent from the previous three months. Ian Bell, director of the Initiative in Bath and North East Somerset, part of Business West, said the progress with the city's enterprise zone would help get more into work. "The flood mitigation project is a very welcome boost to the local economy because it will remove one of the major obstacles to the development of sites next to the river. We very much hope that the right balance will be found for the use of the sites combining employment space, residential and leisure and cultural facilities." Nationally the unemployment rate fell by 99,000 to 2.39 million. Those out of work now account for 7.4 per cent of the country's economically active population.
