"Bitton claims are a joke" says angry Moneyfields manager Miles Rutherford

Moneyfields manager Miles Rutherford has stoked a war of words with Bitton counterpart Paul Britton, calling his claims over Saturday's abandoned FA Vase tie "a joke". An ill-tempered match was called off five minutes into extra-time following a mass brawl involving both sets of players and, allegedly, some spectators. Britton told the Chronicle yesterday: "I think the referee abandoned the game because of his own safety." But Rutherford says he is incensed by the comments and labelled Bitton as "the guilty party". "I am amazed by their manager's comments," he told the Portsmouth Evening News. "They are a joke. What he is saying is absolute nonsense and I don't understand why the game was abandoned. "There was no ill-feeling between the clubs, their players and their supporters after the game. "The referee was never threatened or spoken to by any of our supporters or players. "I can only think Britton is trying to cover up that it was one of his players who head-butted one of ours. We are not the guilty party in all this." The two clubs are waiting to hear what sanctions await them following the abandonment, with expulsion from the FA Vase a possibility. Should they have to replay, the winners will entertain Eastern Counties premier division leaders Hadleigh United in the fourth round.
