More than 80 people have attended a meeting to discuss the future of their local pub. Supporters of the Richmond Arms at Lansdown have been told they will have to find almost £400,000 to buy the pub if they want to save it from developers. The Punch Taverns pub has been listed on Bath and North East Somerset Council's list of assets of community value, which means members of the Save The Richmond Arms Campaign have six months to find the money. The Richmond Arms (Bath) Community Benefit Society Limited has been set up by the campaign group to raise the money through community shares, which will be priced at between £500 and £20,000. The group wants to refurbish the Richmond Arms and lease it to a tenant who would continue to run it as a local pub. Chairman Colin MacAusland told the crowd the campaign could not continue without the support of the community. He said volunteers were needed to help raise the profile of the campaign and attract financial supporters. Gerard Coles, who is involved with the Save The Packhorse campaign in South Stoke, and Conservative parliamentary candidate for Bath, Ben Howlett, also attended the meeting to give their support. Campaign secretary and chairman of Bath's Federation of Small Businesses, Angela MacAusland, said the meeting had illustrated the local desire to keep the pub. "Seeing the Richmond Arms full to bursting again was indicative that there is community spirit in the area and a real sense that there is a desire to keep the pub alive, whether its used for coffee mornings, eating out, business meetings or just a get together with a neighbour for a drink." A share prospectus including a business plan will be available in the New Year. For more information, contact richmondarmsbath@yahoo.co.uk.
