A Bath concierge has received a prestigious award after saving the life of a passerby. David Mead- Male, who works at The Royal Crescent Hotel, saved the life of a 67-year-old man who had collapsed. In recognition of his actions he was given a Catey Award at the annual Caterer and Hotelkeeper's awards, that celebrate the hotel industry's operational successes. Mr Mead-Male won the Extra Mile Award, which is given to hotel staff who are prepared to go above and beyond the call of duty. Royal Crescent general manager Sharon Love said: "We are delighted that David is being recognised for the amazing job he did saving Mr Munday's life. "We are very proud to have such a selfless man on the team" . John Munday, from Bedfordshire had been visiting his daughter Sarah Smith, and had been walking along the crescent with her, her husband and his granddaughter, when he collapsed last September. Mrs Smith ran to the hotel for help, and Mr Mead-Male rushed to the scene to find Mr Munday showing no signs of life. He performed CPR on him, helped by a passing doctor and anaesthetist, before handing Mr Munday over to paramedics when the ambulance arrived. Mrs Smith said: "My father was in intensive care for five days after that and spent a further three weeks on a cardiac ward. He now has an implanted defibrillator. "Without any shadow of doubt we owe his life to David. "If he had not been on duty I dread to think what would have happened. "David told us that there was no-one else around at the time who could administer CPR - and he'd only come on duty himself ten minutes earlier. "No words can express how we feel about him." Mr Mead-Male was awarded a Royal Humane Society resuscitation certificate and was praised by secretary Dick Wilkinson. He said: "Put quite simply, David was the right person in the right place at the right time. "There was no-one else around at the hotel who had been trained in administering CPR. "And if Mr Munday had collapsed earlier David would not have been there either. "However, thankfully he was and he did a truly magnificent job. "He saved a life – the greatest service one human being can do for another!" The Catey Awards took place last night at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge London.
