Former Bath Rugby captain Steve Borthwick will retire at the end of the season. The 34-year-old Cumbrian lock, who also skippered England 21 times, starred at The Rec for a decade before signing for Saracens in 2008. Borthwick had been offered the chance to stay with Sarries beyond the end of the current campaign but said he was keen to end his playing career on his "own terms". He lifted the last piece of silverware won by Bath – the European Challenge Cup – five-and-a-half years ago and made 246 appearances in blue, black and white. "Very few players have the chance to retire on their own terms," said Borthwick, who graduated from the University of Bath with an economics and politics degree. "Saracens did ask me if I'd like to carry on but I feel that the time is right for me to finish playing at the end of the season. "That's still a few months away, and I am obviously 100% focussed on improving as a player and leading this team to the best of my ability." Sarries director of rugby Mark McCall said: "Steve, as a leader, as a player and as a man, sets the highest standards in everything he does. He will be sorely missed in due course."
