Families have been getting into the festive spirit by taking to the ice at Bath's rink. Bath on Ice, in Royal Victoria Park, opened yesterday and is already proving popular with locals and visitors who want to get their skates on. Director Simon Smith said many of the sessions were already booking up, with evenings and weekends likely to sell out. He said: "We have had a lot of positive feedback so far, people have been saying it is great to see us back again and that they always like to go somewhere to skate at this time of year. "We are in a great location because we are a little bit out of the way of the busy city centre, but still easy to walk to, and it is lovely to walk through the park on a crisp day like today." Mr Smith said that on a busy day, when the weather was good, he would expect to see up to 1,000 have a go on the ice and that was likely to get busier the close they got to Christmas. He added: "If people want to come down, especially at weekends and evenings, then they really need to book, because we are seeing some big groups and schools, thing like that, already reserving places." Shelley Ford had travelled in from Warmley with her son Liam to enjoy the ice rink. She said: "It is something new to do and have a go at and this is the only place around here since the rink in Bristol shut." Liam, who is ten and a pupil at the Meadows Primary School in Bitton, said he was looking forward to getting out on the ice. Ella, four, was at the rink with her aunty Helena Slater, who was visiting from Yorkshire. The Saltford Primary School pupil had been to the rink last year so was looking forward to having a go again because she enjoyed it so much last time. Ms Slater added: "It is perfect, because it marks the beginning of Christmas."
