Organisers of a fast-growing festival of cycling say they want to encourage more women to take part next year.

Registration has opened for the 2014 Bike Bath weekend, with 1,500 places on organised rides of up to 100 miles.

It will be the third time the weekend event has been held, with numbers increasing from 700 in its first year to 1,100 riders earlier this year.

Organiser Steve Baxter said feedback about the event, which will happen on June 28 and 29, had been heartening.

"Yet again we have been really encouraged by all the positive comments from riders and sponsors from this year's event and we feel Bath now has a cycling weekend to compete with the best cycling events in the UK."

He added: "Our real challenge this year is to attract more females and youngsters to the event, although with 25 per cent of our riders being female this year, we are up there as one of the most female-friendly bike events in the country."

The event, which sees some rides using the Two Tunnels route, is sponsored by investment firm Charles Stanley Direct.

Starting and finishing at the Recreation Ground, the rides range in distance from 20 to 100 miles, and organisers hope to persuade 200 people to become Bike Bath Gladiators by completing both 100-mile rides over the weekend.

The weekend is a boost to the economy, with 40 per cent of riders coming from outside the west.

Information about the event is at www.bike bath.co.uk, through Facebook and Twitter, and by calling 0845 3880037.
