Oldfield Park Junior School search for past pupils who died during First World War

Young historians at a Bath primary school are looking for the community's help in tracing 33 former pupils who died during the First World War. Children from Oldfield Park Junior School have launched a local history project which will see them learn about the lives of young men from the city who did not return home from the Great War. They have studied a plaque which hangs in the school hall in memory of the soldiers and are hoping they can find out more about the people behind the names. Head teacher Marilyn Cole said she hoped the project would get the children interested in the history of their school and local area and build up their research and analytical skills. She said: "What we really want the children to do is to act as historians, because this is a topic which is so relevant for them. "We want them to research things for themselves, to piece the bits together and it would be great if they could interview people who know about these men and their families. "We also want this to be a real community project and we hope at the end we can put all of the work together to publish a book and also a website." One of the pupils, Year 6 school council member Isabel, said she was already hoping she might have a family link to one of the men on the plaque. She said: "When we talked about it in assembly and all the names were getting called, one of them was R. Randall, and straight away it sprung into my mind. "My cousin's last name is Randall and I thought it might be linked because they live around this area." Her classmates Freddy, Leon and Danniella said they were hoping to get lots of information about the 33 men, especially photographs so they could see what they looked like. Anyone who can help the children with the history project, should email OPJSWW1@oldfieldpark.bathnes.sch.uk or phone 01225 423477. The names of the 33 men on the school plaque: Brock. R. Pte Billett.
