What's your favourite part of Bath?
That's a difficult one! I love everything about Bath, particularly anywhere with a great view. Lansdown, the Circus and Royal Crescent, Royal Victoria Park where the balloons take off from, for example. This area is so central and yet so green. I recently discovered Larkhall and its lovely community spirit. During the day it has a great village feel.
Where's the best place to eat?
Gascoyne Place, naturally, although I would say that wouldn't I? It depends who you're with and what you're after. For a romantic meal I like Casanis, the wonderful French restaurant on Saville Row. It's consistently good, the atmosphere intimate and a small family-run business similar to Gascoyne Place. Madrid is a great Spanish restaurant which serves authentic, contemporary Spanish cuisine, and for an old fashioned curry I like Boojon.
What's the best view in the city?
The view from North Road and Sham Castle is stunning. The light is amazing and the view at sunset when Bath's honey-coloured stone comes alive is magical.
What would your perfect day in Bath entail?
Sunday is usually my day off with family and friends. Before my son was born I would have said a lie-in! This is no longer possible, however, thanks to the sleep patterns of a two-year-old. I like to potter in the garden, enjoy a coffee and some play time with my son. I enjoy meeting friends for a leisurely lunch out or perhaps at theirs or ours.
Where would you meet friends for a drink?
I'll go with the flow if we are a crowd and when there's a few of us we try to support some of the quirkier independents like The Green Tree, The Bell, The Raven and The Royal Oak.
What's your favourite shop?
I really don't like shopping in the traditional sense and come out in a sweat just at the thought of going clothes shopping and household furniture shopping etc, which are my pet hates. However, I love kitchen gadgets and am particularly fond of Kitchens.
I also like traditional tool and music shops and used to enjoy browsing in Duck Son and Pinker until it closed earlier this year, whilst Avery and Knight are great if you need anything metalworking. Food and wine shopping are also good fun and Raisin Wines on Walcot Street offers a fantastic selection.
Eric Snooks is just wonderful for toys and I can spend hours browsing with my son; the Farmers' Market is great for fresh produce and game and Rossiters for that special, unique gift is a gem.
What one thing about Bath would you change?
Pedestrianising more of Bath to support local businesses is top of my list. One of the joys of Bath is that it is one of the most walk-friendly cities in the UK, but I think the city needs to maximise its potential with more continuity of policy and connection to push changes through. I would limit the large chain operators as some other councils are now doing to enable more individual shops to flourish.
As regards business rates, it would be great if the council could support independent businesses more with favourable business rates to help us through these tough times.
