Free early years education for 250 children in Bath

Around 250 children from the poorest families in Bath and north east Somerset are now eligible for free early years education.

And the number will rise to 600 next year, thanks to extra Government funding which has now become available.

This week's move means that two-year-olds from the poorest 20 per cent of households will get 15 hours of free childcare each week, either with a nursery or a childminder.

Next year the provision will be extended to include the poorest 40 per cent of households.

Bath MP Don Foster welcomed the move, which has been made possible thanks to £600 million of investment.

He said: "I am delighted by this announcement, as education is an area in which I have been involved in throughout my life and I believe that this policy will have a noticeable impact on the performance of children from poorer backgrounds.

"Early education helps promote a child's physical, emotional and social development.

"This extra support for low income families is a real Liberal Democrat achievement in our pursuit of a fairer society."
