A Bath-based optician has raised concerns that not enough parents are getting their children's eyes tested.
Brian Vousden, who works at Bath Opticians Ltd, said up to one in five youngsters suffer from an undiagnosed eye condition, which can affect their education.
He said: "As an experienced optometrist, it is worrying to see that children's eye tests are decreasing simply because your eyesight affects your ability to learn and concentrate.
"Many young children are unable to tell whether or not they have an eye condition, making it vitally important that they attend annual eye examinations."
He added: "Many parents overlook eye tests either because they don't understand how beneficial it is to their children's development or because they don't have time.
"We want to encourage parents to book their children in for eye examinations with us as part of their back to school routine.
"It's a great way to ensure that your children will get the best start in life and enjoy their school years."
According to research by the Association of Optometrists, children's eye tests are at a ten year low.
Eye examinations for children are free on the NHS and advances in optical technology mean that children who haven't learnt to speak yet can still have their eyes tested fully.
