Proposals to transform a village recreation ground have been met with mixed feelings from locals.
The plans for Wellow Playing Field include two tennis courts and lighting and are part of a larger scheme to create an outdoor sports area in the village.
A planning application has been submitted to Bath and North East Somerset Council by Wellow Parish Council on behalf of Wellow Sports and Wellow Tennis Club, the community groups set up to lead the scheme.
Other phases of the £160,000 project will include a bowling green, football pitch, outside gym equipment, a running track and cricket nets.
Peter Downey, chairman of the new tennis club, which was established earlier this year to help run the new facility if it is built, said: "The application is for two tennis courts but we won't stop there; the whole project is to even the ground for other sports.
"We have a large football pitch with large slopes and uneven surfaces that hasn't been played on for years."
Mr Downey said the group had ambitions to create an official tennis club complete with a professional coach.
He added: "We believe it is part of the Olympic legacy to get people more involved in sport and to make sure tennis is open to all people of all back- grounds and all ages.
"We will have a lot of work ahead of us if we get planning permission because we then have to get the money."
The proposals have received the support of the Lawn Tennis Association and the Football Association and will be paid for through grant applications.
However, despite a village referendum in January, which revealed 66 per cent of local people were in support of the scheme, the application has attracted several objections.
Martin Thomas, of West End Cottages, said he believed the courts would become an eyesore and was against the introduction of new lighting.
He said: "The upkeep of the courts will divert council funds away from other more important needs that the village has."
Duncan Hammerton, of Windy Ridge, said he believed the two courts would cost too much money and were not needed.
