Old newspapers create chain reaction among Bath Community Academy pupils

They used to say that today's newspapers were tomorrow's fish and chip paper.

But students at Bath Community Academy have gone one step further and found a new use for old Bath Chronicles – recycling them into giant paper chains.

The activity was part of an end of term community day, when all the pupils were set challenges to compete against each other in their communities, which operate like houses.

They had to create items of clothing using recycled materials, take part in races using large inflatables and try to make the longest paper chain in just 50 minutes.

The Respect Community's chain was 130 metres long, the Excellence Community's was 151 metres and the Friendship Community's winner reached 158 metres.

Students had been encouraged to bring in old newspapers and the Chronicle also donated huge bundles of papers.

After combining all the scores from the events, the Respect Community was crowned the overall community day competition winner.

PE teacher Ali Trippick, who organised the day, said it had been a resounding success.

She said: "As a bystander it would have looked as though the students were having a day off lessons and the focus was on fun rather than learning.

"However, the skills the students developed during their community day are ones they use in everyday lessons.

"Students used problem- solving, time management, teamwork, communication, respect, support, trial and error, excellence and perseverance to complete all of the challenges.

"There is a real sense of community spirit among the students at Bath Community Academy and they really came together to create some fantastic results.

"It was wonderful to see how they all threw themselves into each challenge.

"It was a fantastic way to finish what has been a great first year for BCA."

The school came into being last September as a co-educational replacement for the all-boys Culverhay School.
