A group of children as young as three have been learning to speak a foreign language.

A group of three-year-olds and four-year-olds from Mulberry Kidz Day Nursery in Bathampton have been given certificates for the completion of a Spanish course.

The children have been taking part in weekly lessons as part of their introduction to the language.

Spanish teacher Katherine Mallia, who has been following the La Jolie Ronde method, said it was important for children to start learning languages from a young age.

She said: "Teaching languages to children at this age, it is possible to make best use of their ability to listen and copy new sounds, intonation and gesture.

"Babies and young children have a greater capacity for tuning into foreign language sounds than at any other time during their lives."
