Families share vision for ex-Ministry of Defence site at Foxhill

People living in Foxhill have been sharing their vision for its former Ministry of Defence site.

Housing group Curo, which bought the 42-acre site earlier this year, has started what it calls a comprehensive period of consultation.

It is keen to create strong links with its existing estate and to gather as many views as possible on how it should develop the land.

There will be a mix of private and social housing on the site, but a Curo spokesman said detailed plans would not be drawn up until the process was complete.

He said: "The one-to-one consultations are literally the first stage in a very comprehensive period of consultation. Once this whole summer of consultation has been done, that's when Curo will go back to the drawing board and come up with proposals."

Mother-of-three Kirsty Oatley, 25, has lived in Foxhill for seven years.

She said: "I would like to see houses and flats because there are a lot of people trying to be re-housed. Shops would be good because there's only two at Combe Down, and Sainsbury's and Tesco are quite far – about a 20-minute walk from Foxhill.

"A lot of people say they would like to see a school up there but I'm happy with the school my children go to – St Martin's is really good."

She added that it was important that more family housing was created.

Local councillors have this week been given a tour of the empty MoD site by Curo. Local people will be able to look around later in the summer.

Councillor Roger Symonds (Lib Dem, Combe Down) said: "We are pleased Curo has acquired the site. Our hopes are that there can be some form of integration with the Foxhill site and the MoD development. Curo has the potential to bring together Combe Down village and Foxhill."

Mr Symonds and fellow Combe Down councillor Cherry Beath will be hosting a public meeting at Combe Down Primary School on June 13 at 6.30pm for people to ask about the MoD site and share ideas.
