Walker trampled by cows released from hospital

A 72-year-old man who was trampled by cows near Winsley has been released from hospital.

John Porter, who lives at Monkton Combe, was badly injured by the animals on farmland in Turleigh, and is now recovering at home after being treated at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol for a collapsed lung and broken ribs.

His younger brother Mike Porter was killed in the incident, which happened as they were out walking a dog.

He was a highly respected retired academic who had been visiting from Scotland.

It was the fourth time in the last three years that someone had been hurt by cows in the village, and concerns have been raised over the herd, owned by farmer Brian Godwin.

Simon Dark was trampled by the cows in 2008 while walking his dog, and in 2011 Winsley engineer David Billington was left with broken neck bones after being knocked over.

National Farmers' Union signs warning of the dangers of dogs around cattle – especially during the spring – have since been put up beside the field.
