University of Bath apologises after student party in front of the Royal Crescent

The University of Bath has apologised after some of its students held an unofficial party at the Royal Crescent, leaving local residents to clear up the mess they left behind. Saturday night's incident saw piles of carrier bags, bottles and cans strewn across the lawn in front of the Bath beauty spot. The students had been celebrating the end of their exams and decided to hold the outdoor party before going on to their annual students' union summer ball. However, they failed to clean up after themselves and it was left to volunteer litter pickers to step in and tidy up the aftermath. A University of Bath spokesman has called the situation "unacceptable" and "disappointing". He said: "The university apologises for the behaviour of some of its students who left the Royal Crescent in an unacceptable state on Saturday evening, and is very grateful to those local volunteers who stepped in to tidy up. "This unofficial 'party' happened prior to the students' union summer ball that took place on campus, and was an event of which neither the university nor students' union were aware in advance. "When we have been made aware of similar events previously, action has been taken to remind students of their responsibility to be good neighbours and clear up after themselves and we will ensure this message is reinforced ahead of future events. "It is disappointing that the irresponsible and inconsiderate actions of a few should potentially overshadow the positive impact of the voluntary and charity work many University of Bath students do within our shared community throughout the year." The spokesman added that both the university and student's union would now try to repair the damage to community relations by working with Bath and North East Somerset Council and other groups to find more opportunities for students to make a positive contribution to the local community over the coming year. The summer ball took place at the University of Bath campus on Saturday night and included a set by Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe. Bath Spa University's summer ball took place on the Friday night and the Chronicle has also contacted its students' union to see if any of its students attended Saturday night's party. One of the volunteers who helped clean up the Royal Crescent, Rob Harvey, asked party-goers to make donations to either Help for Heroes or St John's Ambulance as a goodwill gesture.
