A Bradford on Avon schoolgirl has won a place on the England under-tens girls' chess team.
Sophie Cottle, who is now ten, has been playing chess since she became intrigued by her dad Mark's set at the age of six.
He taught her the rules of the game and she began playing for her school, Christchurch Primary, a year later.
Her mum Sarah took her to Wiltshire Chess Fun Day events, where Sophie won matches and caught the eye of the county's junior chess team coaches.
She said: "I love playing chess because I have made lots of new friends, and I get to travel all over the country with my mum. I enjoy the challenge of trying to win and to make myself better at playing chess, and I really love it if I win a trophy."
Her mum added: "I am extremely proud of her and really admire her determination. Even when she loses, she still wants to learn from it and go back and try even more. She is very gracious even in defeat."
Her next national competition will be the Delancey UK Schools Chess Challenge Megafinal at Market Lavington on June 8, where she will compete to be named as the top player in the county.
Sophie first competed for an England place in a tournament earlier this month, when she won both of her matches and secured her place in the national girls' team. She will be competing for England in a match against Wales on Saturday in Monmouth, cheered on by her parents and younger sister Amy, who is seven.
