Bath to Bradford canal walk to aid Oxfam

People will be carrying buckets of water on their heads in a fundraising walk for Oxfam.

A sponsored Water Walk is being held in Bath to raise awareness of the distance people in Africa have to travel to collect water.

Organised by the Bath Oxfam fundraising team, the walk takes place on June 30, along the Kennet and Avon canal from the city to Bradford on Avon.

People are invited to bring a bucket and carry water along the route.

Organiser Claire Ripley said: "The average distance that women and girls in Africa walk every day to collect up to 20 litres of water is six kilometres (four miles).

"We are not expecting people to carry that amount of water but we are hoping people will join us to raise money on behalf of Oxfam to help provide safe running water to villages in the developing world."

The walk begins at 10am at Beckford Road bridge.

Meanwhile, a Bath woman was invited to Downing Street to acknowledge her work on campaigning for a global arms treaty.

Janine Woodward, 32, has worked with Controlarms, a collaboration of charities including Oxfam, for ten years, fighting for justice and a weapons-free world.

Now that a treaty has been signed at the UN to regulate the arms trade, she was invited to attend a celebratory reception.

Ms Woodward said: "I had been involved in a number of Oxfam campaigns already, but I really felt this one was vital.

"I thought it utterly ridiculous that guns were so unregulated."

She added: "The work of all involved in campaigning for a global arms trade treaty proves that we can all make a difference when we work together.

"It's vital that we use this success to spur us on to continue campaigning and speaking out for those whose voice cannot be heard."
