Bath Philharmonia conductors works with young carers

Young carers in Bath and north east Somerset are to benefit from a creative project working with some of the finest and most experienced musicians in the country.

Jason Thornton, conductor of the Bath Philharmonia, will be working with students aged 14 to 18 to create a musical piece about their experiences and feelings.

The finished piece will be performed by the orchestra at the Holburne Museum during Carers' Week next month.

Mr Thornton said he was looking forward to seeing what the young people created.

He said: "Being musical is not important to taking part.

"Through residential workshops, the students contribute their thoughts about life and caring.

"Expression through music and the arts is incredibly powerful and the audience can expect to be moved by what they hear and see at the concert in June."

Meanwhile a group of young carers will be treated to a day out at Horseworld thanks to a £400 donation from The Co-operative Group.

Sonia Hutchinson, from B&NES Carers' Centre, said: "Respite for carers is all too often a rarity in their lives, so additional funding specifically to pay for a day trip will be a well-deserved treat."
