Fire crews fight huge blaze near Frome

Fire crews from across Somerset and Wiltshire were fighting a huge fire near Frome today. When crews arrived on the scene around 80 bales of bio fuel were on fire and the blaze had spread to a field at the Timber Store, Buckland Down, near Dinham. The first crews immediately called for back-up as the size of the fire became clear. At the height of the blaze crews from Frome, Radstock, Warminster and Trowbridge were fighting the flames with support from teams from Wells, Somerset, Yeovil, Shepton Mallet and Glastonbury. The alarm was raised at around 3.30pm today as Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received a number of calls. The service said at one stage 250 square metres of crops were well alight and crews used beaters and water hoses to fight the flames. An off-road vehicle from Frome was called in to ferry equipment and firefighters because of the size of the area alight.
