22,000 in Bath and north east Somerset sign up for free waste and recycling permit scheme

Around 22,000 people across Bath and north east Somerset have signed up for a new recycling permit scheme. Bath and North East Somerset Council has declared its recently-introduced new policy for its recycling and waste centres a success. It began on April 2 and means that residents must apply for a free electronic permit in order to use one of the three facilities in Midland Road, in Bath, Keynsham and Old Welton, or show their Discovery Card. The local authority said it was introduced to reduce the amount of people coming in from outside B&NES to dispose of their waste for free - which costs local taxpayers around £60,000 a year. However, critics of the scheme raised concerns that the move could lead to an increase in fly tipping. Councillor David Dixon, B&NES cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said he was pleased with how it had been going so far. He said: "The take up of permits within the first month has been fantastic and it's great to see that B&NES residents are still as keen as ever to recycle. "The council is continuing to proactively enforce the new system and if residents try to enter one of the centres without a permit, staff will inform them how to become authorised. "The permit scheme is an important way of the council protecting frontline services for the public by becoming more financially efficient." B&NES is expecting a busy bank holiday weekend at its recycling centres so is urging residents to make sure they have signed up for their permit beforehand. People can get more information by going to www.bathnes.gov.uk, emailing councilconnect@bathnes.gov.uk or phoning 01225 394041. Waste and recycling household collections will continue as normal on bank holiday Monday. * How have you found the new permit scheme? Leave your comments below.
