People are appealing for information after a 24-year-old man was found with a serious head injury this morning.
The man was found collapsed in Beechen Cliff Road at around 4.30am.
He was taken to the Royal United Hospital and later transferred to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.
It is not known how he came by his injuries, but detectives know his identity and have contacted his family.
They are puzzled as to whether he was attacked or whether he fell over.
They are tracing his movements overnight, and particularly want to speak to a man they describe of being of student age seen with him in the Beechen Cliff area.
The man, who is white and of thin build, was wearing either a red and white checked shirt or an orange T-shirt.
He is reported to have left the scene when an ambulance arrived.
